The Legend

Quetzalcoatl gave the Toltecs cacao beans so that his people would be well-nourished and thus be studious, wise, artistic and artisan. Quetzalcoatl stole the cacao tree from paradise where the gods lived and planted the small bush in Tula. After planting it, he asked Tláloc to send rain to the earth so that the plant could be nourished and grow. Then he went to visit Xochiquetzal, goddess of love and beauty, and asked her to give the tree beautiful flowers. Over time, the plant flourished and produced cacao fruits. This is the legend that is told about the origin of cocoa in Mexico.
