À la découverte de la Rosca de Reyes au Québec
Every year, as the Epiphany of January 6th approaches, Mexico lights up with festive excitement, marking the last celebration of Christmas with the unmissable Rosca de Reyes .

What is the Rosca de Reyes?

The Rosca de Reyes is a sweet, crown-shaped bread. The word "rosca" means crown and "reyes" means kings; the Rosca de Reyes is therefore literally the crown of kings. It is traditionally decorated with brightly colored candied fruits reminiscent of the jeweled crowns of the Three Wise Men. It is often enjoyed with hot chocolate or a hot beverage such as atole .

The origin and meaning of the Rosca

The Rosca de Reyes (King Cake) draws its inspiration from the 17th-century French King Cake. Adapted over time, it found its place in Spain before arriving in Mexico. Its round or oval shape symbolizes eternal love for God, without beginning or end, while also evoking the crown of the Three Wise Men.
Inspired by Spanish tradition, children write to the Three Wise Men – Melchor, Gaspar, and Balthazar – to request toys. The night before, they leave grass by the window or under the Christmas tree to feed the horses of the Santos Reyes (another name for the Three Wise Men). The following morning, they discover the toys or sweets left in return.

La Rosca de Reyes: Much More Than a Sweet Bread

Tradition dictates that everyone gathers to cut this delicious wreath. Each person, in turn, cuts their slice of this treat, in which one or more figurines representing the baby Jesus are hidden. Whoever finds the figurine is then responsible for organizing a celebration with tamales on February 2nd, for Día de la Candelaria.

A Friendly and Joyful Tradition

Beyond its rich religious symbolism, the Rosca de Reyes remains first and foremost an occasion for convivial gatherings, filled with laughter, coffee, hot chocolate, or atole. It concludes the Christmas festivities in a warm atmosphere, embodying for many Mexicans a timeless heritage.
