Unfortunately, you won’t be able to get these alcohols here in Quebec, but you can taste them on your next trip to Mexico or make one of the recipes (rompope or tepache) that we offer.

Mexican alcohol no.1: rompope

Blog - Mexican Spirits - RomopeRompope is to Mexico what eggnog is to Quebec. This creamy liqueur made from white rum, from the convents of the Puebla region, is made from chicken egg yolks to which ground almonds, cow’s milk, sugar, vanilla and cinnamon are added.

Like any creamy drink, it is best enjoyed as a digestive. It is possible to find this liqueur in the form of a ready-to-drink drink, however, it is tastier and more delicious when prepared by yourself with fresh ingredients like the recipe we offer.

Mexican Alcohol No. 2: Tepache

Blog - Mexican Spirits - TepacheTepache is a sparkling drink obtained through the fermentation of pineapple peel and peel. It is sweetened with raw cane sugar such as piloncillo or panela and seasoned with cinnamon, cloves and, sometimes, even cardamom. To add a little spice, you can also add a little allspice.

It is easy to make tepache yourself since fermentation does not require any cultivation. This is called a so-called wild fermentation.

Mexican alcohol no.3: pulque

Blog - Mexican Spirits - PulqueThis drink with a particular taste has had its ups and downs. Following the appearance of beer, there were only a few pulquería, those taverns where pulque was bought and tasted. However, this drink is now regaining popularity, perhaps due to the back-to-basics trend.

In pre-Hispanic times, pulque was considered a divine drink used to alter consciousness in order to better communicate with the gods. Pulque is obtained by fermenting the maguey plant, which is a plant of the aloe vera family.

It can be drunk neat or with fruit in curado, which is a Mexican cocktail similar to a daiquiri, but with crushed fruit that is brought to a boil with water until it reaches a thick consistency. Let everything cool and add the pulque.
