Discovering the Rosca de Reyes in Quebec

Every year, as Epiphany approaches on January 6, Mexico lights up with festive excitement, marking the last Christmas celebration with the unmissable Rosca de Reyes.
Rosca de Reyes is a sweet bread in the shape of a crown. The term “rosca” refers to a crown and “Reyes” means kings; the Rosca de Reyes is therefore literally the crown of kings. It is traditionally decorated with brightly coloured candied fruit reminiscent of the jewelled crowns of the Three Kings. The tasting is often accompanied by a hot chocolate or a hot drink such as atole.

The origin and meaning of the Rosca

The Rosca de Reyes draws its inspiration from the 17th century from the galette des rois in France. Adapted over time, it found its place in Spain before arriving in Mexico. Its round or oval shape symbolizes eternal love for God, without beginning or end, while evoking the crown of the Three Kings.
The children, inspired by Spanish custom, write to the Three Wise Men – Melchor, Gaspar and Baltazar – to make their wishes for toys. The day before, they lay grass near the window or under the tree to feed the horses of the Santos Reyes (another name for the Three Kings). The next morning, they discover the toys or treats left in exchange.

La Rosca de Reyes: Much more than a sweet bread

Tradition dictates that everyone comes together to cut this gourmet crown. Each one, in turn, cuts his share of this delight in which one or more figurines representing the baby Jesus are hidden. Whoever finds the figurine then becomes responsible for organizing a celebration with tamales on February 2, for the Día de la Candelaria.

A Friendly and Joyful Tradition

Beyond its rich religious symbolism, the Rosca de Reyes remains above all an opportunity for convivial gatherings, imbued with laughter, coffee, hot chocolate or atole. It concludes the Christmas festivities in a warm atmosphere, embodying for many Mexicans a timeless heritage.
